Having no children of his own, Hogarth’s many depictions of childhood, youth and “growing up” in London shows a real concern for the lives and well-being of young people. As a governor of the Foundling Hospital he and his wife Jane were closely involved with child welfare. Through his images of privileged as well as destitute children we are given real insight into his times - and into the moral universe of the man himself. |
