An introduction to the major wares of Chinese Ceramic History. Illustrated with examples from the world-famous Shanghai Museum, we explore China’s unique ceramic heritage, from the fifth millennium BC to the present, focusing on early luxuries to the grave goods of the First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi (and his “terracotta warriors”); the following, equally prolific Han, Sui and Tang dynasties; the gradual emergence of that magical white material we call “porcelain” -what it is, how it is made- right down to the ceramics of today. Ending by a return to the exquisite wares of the Song, a thousand years distant though utterly “modern” and shaping the works of potters today. |
