Harlots, Rakes & Crashing China

Crockery, pots and fine porcelain teeter, totter and cascade through the lively and sometimes riotous images of Hogarth’s dramas.  Never innocent bystanders, ceramics actively contribute to the narrative while simultaneously –and fortuitously for the ceramic historian – capturing a whole spectrum of potters’ traditions at a time of intense East-West trade wars.  A rumbustuous introduction to 18th century ceramics - and to William Hogarth himself.

One of my most requested talks.  Premiered in 1997 (the Hogarth Tercentenary) at the International Ceramics Fair and Seminar, London in conjunction with my Exhibition (and book) Hogarth’s China
