At midnight, after some animated drinking in Covent Garden, five friends head for the river, hire a boat, slip downstream to Gravesend and surface for a refreshing shave a few hours later at the Crown in Rochester.  For the next few days, in boisterous spirits, they tour  the Medway towns, on foot and by boat, returning to their homes on the fifth day.  We follow the journey:  what they found, who they met, the stories they were told and what they ate en route.  And what does the area look like today?
